Celebrating its 41st Anniversary, the Virginia Pony Breeders Association’s 2023 Yearling Futurity was held at the Upperville Colt & Horse Show on Sunday, June 11th. Of the twenty-three yearlings remaining eligible, 9 colts and 7 fillies, competed for prestige and prize money. A total of $4976, derived from Nomination payments and matching VPBA monies, will be paid to the top 8 Breeders and top 6 Owners (if available) in each section.
SMOOTH TALKER, handled by Charlie Brown for his brother, owner/breeder Oliver Brown (Reva, VA) won his section over eight other colt/geldings and went on to be named Grand Champion by judge Dale Crittenberger (Aldie, VA.) The flashy chestnut gelding is sired by Land’s End Adagio (Welsh) x Final Say (Welsh crossbred) by *Menai Mister Mostyn. This is the second consecutive year that the mare Final Say has produced the Futurity Grand Champion. For his win, Smooth Talker received a monogrammed scrim sheet and will have his name engraved on the updated Dominion Saddlery Perpetual Trophy presented annually to the Grand Champion and donated by Robert R. and Alicia Z. Kline.
The crossbred BONUS POINTS captured the second place ribbon in the colt/gelding section. Bred and owned by Alicia Z. Kline (Round Hill, VA), and handled by Drew Taylor (Somerset, VA), the bay gelding is by Wellen Gold Point (Connemara/Arab-Welsh cross) x Shenandoah Fantasia (Welsh) by Farnley Triton. This breeding has produced a Colt/Gelding Champion, and 2nd and 3rd place Filly winners in the previous three years.
The top yearling in the Filly section was SHENANDOAH CORAL BRACELET, a Welsh cross daughter of Farnley Triton (Welsh) x Shenandoah Coral Spring (Arab-Welsh) by T.F. Count Bisbee. Holding the reins for owner/breeder Hetty M-S. Abeles (White Post, VA), was Herschel Schull , Stud Manager of Farnley Farm & Shenandoah Pony Stud. The lovely chestnut pony bested six other fillies, and went on to earn the Reserve Grand Champion title and win a monogrammed scrim sheet . Her dam, Shenandoah Coral Spring, herself was a winner of the Filly section of the Futurity in 2008.
DAMARIS ABELES (White Post, VA), handling her mother’s Shenandoah Pirouette, was named top Junior/Amateur-Owner Handler. Winning the Ethan Maye Challenge Trophy for the 3rd time, she hasnow retired the trophy which was donated by Ethan in 2019.
